Topic 1

Calling and scheduling

How do I get a technician out quickly?

Call (855) 974-4733. Phones are answered 24/7, and same-day visits are offered when a technician is free. For something urgent, such as a wasp nest by a door or an animal in the attic, say so at the start of the call. An arrival time is only given once the technician has confirmed it.

What should I tell you when I call?

Give your street or ZIP code, what you have seen or heard, and where in the building. Mention whether you rent, whether it is a house, a flat or an apartment building, and whether anyone has seen the same pest next door. A photo of the pest, droppings or damage can be sent afterward.

Do you work on weekends and holidays?

Phones are answered every day, including weekends and holidays. Whether a technician can come the same day depends on who is free, so you are told the realistic plan on the call. We do not promise a time that we cannot keep.

Do I need to be home for the visit?

Usually someone should be, so the technician can get into the basement, attic or the unit and talk through what was found. For a rental, the landlord or manager may need to arrange access. If you cannot be there, say so on the phone and ask what can be done.

Do you serve outside the city limits?

Yes. The service area covers Detroit's neighborhoods, nearby cities in Wayne County such as Hamtramck, Dearborn and River Rouge, and suburbs in Oakland and Macomb counties, including Ferndale, Royal Oak, Eastpointe and Warren. See the areas page or check your ZIP code.

Topic 2

Prices and quotes

How much does pest control cost in Detroit?

It depends on the pest, the size of the home, how many visits are needed and how easy it is to reach the basement or attic. We do not publish dollar figures here because we have no sourced ones. The technician confirms the price before treatment starts. See the pricing page and our cost guide.

Will the price change once the technician is there?

The technician inspects first, then gives you the price for what is actually needed, and you confirm it before anything is applied. If the inspection shows something different from what you described, such as termites instead of ants, the work and its price are explained separately.

Is a one-time visit enough, or do I need a plan?

It depends on the pest. A single mouse in a kitchen may be one visit plus sealing, while German cockroaches in a flat often need follow-up, and some people prefer seasonal visits for ants and wasps. The technician explains the options so you can compare a one-time visit against a plan.

Are exclusion and sealing included in a treatment?

Not automatically. Treatment and sealing are different jobs, and the technician explains both before you decide. Where mice or rats are getting in through gaps, sealing is usually what stops the problem from coming back, so it is worth asking about even if you only called about the animals inside.

Topic 3

Safety, licensing and treatments

How do you protect kids and pets during treatment?

Pesticide labels set how a product must be used, including when people and pets can return. The technician follows the label and explains the precautions for your household before leaving. Tell the technician about pets, children and anyone with asthma.

Are pest control companies licensed in Michigan?

Yes. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development licenses pesticide application businesses and certifies commercial applicators. You can ask any company for its license number and check it with the state. Ask for the number of the company coming to your home on the phone before the visit.

Should I use foggers or bug bombs first?

Usually not. Foggers can scatter roaches and bed bugs into neighboring rooms and units without reaching the cracks where they live, and they do nothing about a mouse in a wall. If you have already used one, mention it so the technician knows what was applied.

Why do I see more bugs right after treatment?

It is common to see more activity for a week or two, since some products flush insects out of hiding or work slowly. If activity has not dropped after about two weeks, call, as some pests, such as German cockroaches and bed bugs, often need a follow-up visit.

Topic 4

Detroit pests and weather

When do mice come inside in Detroit?

As nights cool, typically from about September, with entry continuing through the first frosts. Older brick and block homes give them many small gaps. Because mice can breed indoors over winter, early sealing is easier than chasing them in January. See our mouse timeline guide.

Are rats really worse in Detroit?

Reports suggest rat calls are high. Orkin's 2025 ranking, based on its own residential rat calls, put Detroit seventh in the country, and one local pest firm has reported a rise in calls. Residents also say rats scatter when nearby buildings come down. None of that proves a cause, so we focus on what the technician finds.

Who handles rat complaints about a neighbor's property?

The city's Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department, BSEED, has an Environmental Enforcement section that handles rat harborage, and residents can report through the Improve Detroit app. The app has logged 21,990 rodent extermination requests since 2014. See the vacant lots guide.

Why are there swarms of insects on my south wall in October?

Boxelder bugs, Asian lady beetles and cluster flies gather on the south and west sides of buildings in autumn, looking for cracks to overwinter in. MSU Extension notes they may become noticeable again when they wake in spring. Sealing cracks and vents helps. See Boxelder Bug, Cluster Fly and Stink Bug Control.

Do Detroit mosquitoes carry West Nile virus?

West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Wayne County, which traps and tests them through the summer. Most infected people have no symptoms, but older adults and people with weak immune systems are at greater risk of serious illness. Emptying standing water weekly helps. See mosquito control.

Are termites a problem here?

Native subterranean termites live across southern Michigan, including Detroit, though the state is near the northern edge of their range. Swarms typically start from about March on warm, rainy days. How common they are has not been well quantified, so an inspection is a reasonable check, not a reason to panic.
